Lieder Recital - Brahms’ Magelone Lieder

  • June 03 2011 |
Georgetown Festival of the Arts - Georgetown, Texas

Baritone Weston Hurt and pianist Dale Dietert will present Brahms' song cycle, Magelone Lieder as part of the 2011 Georgetown Festival of the Arts.  This is Brahms' only real song cycle.  There is a fairy tale by Ludwig Tieck that was well-known in 19th-century Germany, "Die schöne Magelone."  Tieck tells the story in prose, from time to time inserting poems in the narrative.  Virginia Dupuy will be narrating.  Brahms chose 15 of these songs to set as his Op. 33.  This music is very rarely heard in concert, but I find it fascinating, and completely worthy of Brahms' Lieder output.
